Offertory hymns

To choose a hymn for "offertory" (officially, preparation of the gifts), or any time of offering during a church service, you could look at:
  • Hymns based on the scripture readings of the day or for the service
  • Hymns for the feast-day or season eg a song about resurrection at Easter, the Holy Spirit near Pentecost, or a hymn about a saint on their feast-day
  • The Offertory chant from the Mass "propers" for the day - or hymns based on it.
But there may be times when you don't know any hymns which fit these criteria - or when you don't have the resources (singers, musicians or instruments) to sing them well.

So it can be helpful to know have a small number of general-purpose "offertory" hymns.

The list below has some hymns like this.  Some are about the offertory in a liturgical service, and others about ideas of giving and self-giving.  Free-use hymns that can be freely used with no concerns about copyright, and some which may still be copyright depending on the laws in your country are both included.
